August 3rd Chipper Challenge
This advanced CrossFit chipper workout will challenge your stamina and strength across five diverse movements, pushing your limits with a focus on sustained effort.

Train safely
This workout is general fitness education, not medical advice. Skip movements that hurt, scale loads to your level, and stop if you feel chest pain, dizziness, or joint pain. If you're pregnant, recovering from injury or surgery, or have a heart, blood pressure, or musculoskeletal condition, get clearance from your physician before starting.

Warm-up
We'll start with a dynamic warm-up to get your blood flowing and prepare your body for the intensity of the chipper. Focus on controlled movements and activating the muscle groups we'll be using.
- Rowing: Gentle start to elevate heart rate.
- Leg Swings (forward/backward & lateral): Improve hip mobility and prepare the lower body.
- Torso Twists: Mobilize the spine and core.
- Air Squats: Rehearse the squat pattern and open up the hips.
- Push-ups: Prepare the shoulders and chest for the wall balls.
- Kettlebell Swings (light): Introduce hip hinge and prepare for the deadlifts.
Workout
Today's workout is a chipper, meaning you'll complete all reps of each movement before moving on to the next. The goal is to finish as quickly as possible while maintaining good form. This is a test of endurance and grit.
- Rower: Aim for a strong, consistent pace. Think about driving through your legs and engaging your core for every stroke.
- Deadlifts: Focus on a flat back and driving through your heels. This should be a weight you can complete for 15-20 reps unbroken in a fresh state. Don't let your back round.
- Wall Balls: Keep your chest up and squat deep. Use your legs and hips to drive the ball up to the target. Catch the ball in a squat position for efficiency.
- Box Jumps: Land softly with bent knees. Step down or rebound if you feel confident, but prioritize safety. Ensure full hip extension at the top of the box.
- Kettlebell Swings: Maintain a strong, neutral spine. The power comes from your hips, not your arms. Snap your hips aggressively to propel the kettlebell up.
Cool-down
After that demanding chipper, it's crucial to cool down and help your body recover. Focus on static stretches, holding each for 20-30 seconds.
- Child's Pose: Gentle back stretch.
- Pigeon Stretch: Excellent for hip flexors and glutes.
- Hamstring Stretch (seated or standing): Lengthen the hamstrings after deadlifts and box jumps.
- Quad Stretch (standing or lying): Stretch the quads after all the leg work.
- Shoulder Stretch (e.g., across the body): Release tension in the shoulders.
Coaching notes
This workout is designed to be a grind. The rep schemes are high, so pacing is key. Don't go out too fast on the rower or deadlifts, as it will quickly catch up to you. Break the deadlifts and wall balls into smaller, manageable sets if needed to maintain form. Focus on smooth transitions between movements to minimize wasted time. Think about efficiency in every rep.
Scale it
- Decrease Reps: Reduce the total number of reps for each movement (e.g., 50-40-30-20-10).
- Modify Movements:
- Deadlifts: Reduce weight or perform Kettlebell Deadlifts.
- Wall Balls: Use a lighter ball or perform Thrusters with dumbbells/light barbell.
- Box Jumps: Reduce box height, step-ups instead of jumps.
- Kettlebell Swings: Reduce weight or perform Russian Kettlebell Swings (eye level).
- Increase Rest: Allow for short, active rest periods between movements if necessary to maintain form.
