Warm-up
Begin by gently increasing your heart rate and preparing your muscles for work. Focus on dynamic stretches that mimic the movements you'll be doing in the main workout.
Workout
This session is designed to build foundational strength in your posterior chain. Emphasize control and proper form over heavy weight. For the Romanian Deadlifts, ensure your back remains flat throughout the movement. For the Glute Bridge, really squeeze your glutes at the top.
Cool-down
After your lifts, it's important to bring your heart rate down and gently stretch the muscles you've worked. Hold each stretch for 30-45 seconds, breathing deeply.
Coaching notes
Form is paramount, especially when starting a strength program. Focus on feeling the correct muscles engage. For Romanian Deadlifts, think about pushing your hips back rather than just bending over. Your hamstrings should feel a good stretch. With the Glute Bridge, keep your core engaged and ensure your lower back doesn't arch excessively at the top.
Scale it
- Romanian Deadlift: If the barbell feels too heavy or challenging for form, substitute with dumbbell Romanian Deadlifts. You can also reduce the range of motion until your hamstring flexibility improves.
- Glute Bridge: If bodyweight feels too easy, place a dumbbell or a light barbell across your hips for added resistance. If you have lower back sensitivity, focus on a smaller range of motion and truly initiate the movement from your glutes.
- Dumbbell Rear-Foot Elevated Split Squat: Start with bodyweight only to master balance and form. If balance is an issue, perform regular lunges instead, or hold onto a stable object for support.
